A McDonald’s All-American who reached the NBA, then paid for the weight room he once used.
Josh Childress graduated from Mayfair High School in 2001 as a McDonald’s All-American. His No. 22 jersey is retired at Mayfair.
He was a first-round NBA draft pick in 2004 and played for the Atlanta Hawks, Phoenix Suns, Brooklyn Nets, and New Orleans Pelicans. In Europe he earned All-EuroLeague Second Team honors with Olympiacos in 2010. At Stanford he was an AP first-team All-American and Pac-10 Player of the Year.
Through The Childress Foundation he funded new equipment for Mayfair’s weight room. As he told ABC7, the equipment in that room was the same he had used as a student twenty years earlier — “and it was old when I was there.” The gift went to the Mayfair High School Sports Booster Club.
