The first offensive lineman ever drafted No. 1 overall — and the name on Bellflower Unified’s stadium.
Ron Yary attended Bellflower High School, class of 1964, where he starred in football, baseball, and basketball. The District’s own website describes him as a former student, and Bellflower Unified named its football stadium Ron Yary Stadium in his honor.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame records that Yary joined the Minnesota Vikings as the first player chosen in the 1968 AFL-NFL Draft — the first offensive lineman ever selected first overall. He was a six-time first-team All-Pro, a seven-time Pro Bowl selection, and a member of the NFL 1970s All-Decade Team.
At USC he won the Outland Trophy and a 1967 national championship. He is a member of both the Pro Football Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame.
